Walking & Cycling Holidays
The walking on and from the farm is superb with popular footpaths criss-crossing over the fields. This is a beautiful area rich with wildlife, flora and fauna.
There are magnificent walks from the door – a circuit from Throwley Hall down the Manifold Valley at Beeston Tor, returning via the village of Wetton and the settlement of Casterne on the far side of the Manifold, is an excellent day out.
You can leave the cars at the accommodation and head off for a good days’ walk with easy access to the Manifold Trail and further on to Ilam and Dovedale.
The local hostelries are mostly walker and dog friendly too. Walking maps can be found at www.footpathmaps.com.
Just to the west of Throwley the Manifold and Hamps Valley Trail is a converted light railway which is excellent for cycling or walking. This runs from Waterhouses to Hulme End approx. 9 miles long with tea rooms, footpaths off to local villages and caves for exploring.
For the keen cyclists there are quiet country lanes passing through the picturesque villages and hamlets with wonderful views and wildlife.
For off-road cycling there is:
Manifold Trail (9 miles) at Waterhouses where there is cycle hire, finishing at Hulme End after passing through a former railway tunnel, exploring Thor’s Cave and having a break at the tea rooms.
Tissington Trail (13 miles) starts at Ashbourne (cycle hire and car park) finishing at Parsley Hay.
High Peak Trail (17 miles) joins the Tissington Trail at Parsley Hay. There are some steep inclines.
Cycle route maps can be found at www.sustrans.org.uk and www.cyclinguk.org.
Cycle hire is available at Waterhouses.
